Autumn Newsletter

Hi!

It's newsletter time again! Can you believe it is autumn already? I have had to put an extra blanket on my bed in my treehut because it is getting rather cold at night and all the leaves are turning beautiful colours. This edition is packed full of goodies and our 'hero herb' is extra special as it helps you not to get sick! Yay!

Elfredo's Herb Hero - Echinacea

Here at the herb farm we have some very pretty purple flowers that grow all over the garden and they are called echinacea.

We use it in one of our special healing creams which helps to stop your skin being itchy and dry. We also use it in a special tincture made by picking the flowers. If you start feeling a bit under the weather (like you are getting a cold) Mum or Dad may give you a few drops in your drink and then it will help to make you feel all better again!

When you take Echinacea it works as a boost to your immune system which is a part of your body which helps to fight germs and sickness. You only want to take it when you're just starting to feel sick though, if you take it all the time, it won't help your body to fight off the sickness very well.

Try these tricky word jumbles!

trheawe (hint - I am on the news every night)

lafl (hint - another name for autumn)

reet (hint - I can grow really tall or really small)

nowrb (hint - a colour that you see a lot of at autumn time)

felrode (hint - I live in a tree and I have lots of friends at the herb farm)

efal (hint - I grow on trees and I can be lots of different colours, but green most of the time)

You can do so much with dried leaves.....

Dried leaves that fall from the trees at autumn time are so useful. I decorate my treehut with them every year so I have written down my instructions on how to make some awesome art with any kind of leaves you like.

Leaf printing - Make sure you put down some newspaper first as this needs paint. Just paint one side of your dried leaf any colour you like, than simply press it on to a blank piece of paper. Then you have a pretty print of your leaf and you can do lot's of different colours on the same page.

Leaf stencil - Get two pieces of blank paper and put your leaf in between them. Then get one of your crayons and hold it sideways then colour over the leaf. Your stencil will look awesome. Try and use a really big leaf or lots of little leaves all over the page.

Leaf collage - One more thing I love to do with the dried leaves I collect is to glue them all on a piece of paper and make a collage. The ornages and yellows and browns look so cool against a really bright piece of paper.

See you later Alligator
I hope you have enjoyed my newsletter and had a go at all those fun activites. Zeke, Marli and I are off to gather fire wood to use in my hut in the winter time (I am getting prepared early). I hope to see you out at the herb farm soon. I know there are school holidays coming up so you will definitely have time to visit.

Did you know Autumn is a great time to plant vegetables in your garden?

Broccoli is best when planted in cooler months, just keep an eye out for those slugs and snails.

Cabbage is so yummy and can be used in lots of different meals, plant them in a sunny area.

Silverbeet is another one of my favourites that is easy to plant and easy to look after. It grows at almost any time of the year.

Earth Friendly Ideas
FACT:You can save water simply by turning off the tap while you're brushing your teeth, then turn it back on when you're ready to rinse.

FACT: If you live close to your school. How about asking mum or dad if you can walk to school? It will save petrol and the enviroment and there is nothing like a morning walk to get you energised.

FACT: Another way you can help the environment is to make a 'no junk mail' sign. Ask your mum or dad first to see if it is ok, then you could make your own colourful sign and stick it on the letterbox and then you won't get mail that isn't important and you will help with stopping so many trees being cut down.

Check out my word find game!

Check out my fun recycling 'word find' game on our website - print it out and see how many words you can find. You could time yourself or have a race with friends or your brother or sister too! Even challenge Mum and Dad - it's always fun to beat them.
