the herb farm have been involved in the
Miss Manawatu event for several years now and became the naming sponsor of ‘Miss Teen
Manawatu’ this year.
What comes to mind when you think of beauty pageants? The 80’s, Lorraine
Downs, big hair, fake smiles, fake boobs, tears, tantrums and tiaras, an unrealistic portrait
of beautiful woman, brainless beauties?
You are probably not alone in this view but
Miss Manawatu beauty pageant organiser Kate Balfour is breaking down those stereotypes,
turning away from what no longer works in today’s society and creating an event that inspires
and nurtures young women.
The Miss Manawatu event is a series of workshops over 6 weeks that are about participation, self
growth and education.
While the event naturally has a focus on
looking great, there is also an emphasis on increased awareness of etiquette, developing the
confidence to speak in public, personal grooming, deportment, as well as learning about
respecting the community they live in. To have concern for our planet and how to live in a
manner that cares for the earth. The event nurtures the family unit and another positive
outcome is strengthened mother and daughter relationships.
Kate encourages each girl to enter the competition to
achieve her own personnel goal, whether that be to meet new people, to learn new skills through
public speaking, or deportment or to do something completely out of their comfort zone.
“I will tell the girls in
the first meeting it is not about the destination but the journey and to find a goal and work
towards it”
“the herb farm is proud to be a sponsor of the Miss Teen event this
year. The nature of this event fits with our brands philosophies and values and we see this as an
amazing opportunity to help make a positive influence on the young women of
today”, Sarah Cowan (CEO of the herb
farm).
The herb farm is a trusted Manawatu company who produce truly natural skincare and healthcare
products and knows that beauty does not have to come in a bottle laced with empty promises and
worrisome synthetic ingredients.
Education is high on the herb farm’s values and
all the participants in Miss Teen and their mothers participate in a workshop at the herb
farm and will be knowledgeable about natural skin care and healthy choices, a benefit that
they can carry through their lives.
Sarah Cowan, CEO of the herb farm knows first hand what the modelling world can be
like. Sarah was an international model, living and
working in big cities such as Milan, London, Singapore, Tokyo and Athens and she knows how
tough this industry can be. However Sarah also knows the huge personal
growth that occurs when you have the courage to stretch any limitations you may impose on
yourself.
Sarah is a judge at this year’s event and is looking
forward to seeing how each and every girl develops over the competition. “We will be looking for girls who
are genuine well rounded young women and who have a beauty that shines from the inside
out”.
Winners have to be chosen because it is a competition, but anyone who takes part in the herb farm
Miss Teen or Max Wilson Diamond Jeweller Miss Manawatu will become a winner whether they wear the
crown or not.
