Why your skin barrier is struggling

Like a bad hair day, sometimes we can have “bad skin” days where nothing quite works.

Your usual products feel a bit off, your skin looks dull or uneven, and there’s that underlying tightness that no amount of moisturiser seems to fix. It can feel frustrating, especially if you’re doing all the “right” things. More often than not, this is your skin barrier asking you to take notice and go back to the basics.

What is your skin barrier, really?
Your skin barrier, also known as the stratum corneum, is the outermost layer of your skin. Think of it like a protective shield made up of skin cells (the bricks) and natural lipids (the mortar) that holds everything together. Its job is to:
• Keep moisture in
• Keep irritants, allergens, and bacteria out
• Maintain a healthy, balanced environment on your skin

When it’s functioning well, your skin feels soft, calm, and resilient. When it’s compromised, things can start to feel out of sync.

Signs your barrier might be damaged
A disrupted skin barrier doesn’t always show up in obvious ways. Sometimes it’s subtle but persistent. You might notice:

  • Dryness that doesn’t improve with moisturiser
  • Redness or sensitivity
  • Stinging or discomfort when applying products
  • Flaky or rough texture
  • Breakouts alongside dryness (yes this can happen!)

What damages the skin barrier?
A lot of the time, it comes down to doing a little too much. Skincare has become quite active and layered, and while that can be helpful, it can also tip the balance. Common culprits include:

  • Over-exfoliating, both physical scrubs and acids
  • Using multiple active ingredients at once
  • Harsh cleansers that strip natural oils
  • Environmental stress like wind, sun, and cold weather
  • Ongoing stress and poor sleep

Even a well-meaning routine can leave your skin feeling depleted if there isn’t enough time for repair.

How to repair your skin barrier naturally
The good news is your skin knows how to heal. It just needs the right support.

1. Simplify your routine
Pull things back for a couple of weeks. A gentle cleanser and a nourishing moisturiser are often enough to give your skin space to recalibrate.

2. Focus on nourishment, not correction
Look for products rich in plant oils and butters that mirror your skin’s natural lipids. Ingredients like jojoba, avocado, and shea help restore softness and support repair.

3. Bring in calming botanicals
Herbal support can make a real difference here. Calendula, chamomile, and other soothing plant extracts help reduce redness and irritation while supporting the skin as it rebuilds.

4. Protect, don’t strip
If your skin feels tight after cleansing, it is a sign to switch. Aim for products that leave your skin comfortable and balanced rather than squeaky clean.

5. Support from within
Skin repair is not just topical. Healthy fats, hydration, and a nutrient-dense diet all contribute to stronger, more resilient skin. Omega-3s, zinc, and antioxidants such as Vitamin C and Vitamin E are particularly supportive.

If your skin has been feeling sensitive, dry, or unpredictable, try thinking in terms of rebuilding rather than fixing. Strip things back, choose gentle, nourishing products, and give your skin a bit of breathing room. With the right support, it will find its way back to calm, balanced, and far easier to care for.
